Surviving as an entrepreneur in Murcia: A chat with Murcia Emprendedora

If you’ve ever felt like running a business in Murcia means talking to the walls of your own living room, this interview is for you. We talked to Guillermo Martínez, from Murcia Emprendedora, a community that’s spent seven years proving something simple: you don’t need to move to Madrid or Barcelona to find people to share doubts, contacts and, every now and then, a paella.

Guillermo Martínez has led the community since he created it, seven years ago: “I created Murcia Emprendedora as my way of bringing together talent, projects and people who want to do things differently,” he says. Today that idea is a community of more than 130 entrepreneurs with its own coworking space in downtown Murcia.

What is Murcia Emprendedora, in one line?

A community of more than 130 entrepreneurs with our own coworking space in the center of Murcia. It started seven years ago as a Telegram group because I needed people who spoke my language, and today we’re organized into themed groups — marketing, sales, finance, sport — and we meet in person every month to share blockers, decisions and lessons learned.

Step 1 if you’ve just landed in Murcia

Come to a meeting. That’s it. You can read a thousand things online, but in Murcia things move in person. Our meetup is the last Thursday of every month, and your first time is free, just to see how it feels. You grab a drink, introduce yourself, and leave with five useful contacts.

And a bonus: if you’re coming through as part of the WanderPad community, you get a 10% discount at their coworking space.

The secret ingredient: size

Size. Murcia is big enough that things actually happen, and small enough that within two months you already know the people you need. Add to that a lower cost of living than Madrid or Barcelona, sunshine almost all year round, and locals who’ll invite you to lunch before even asking what you do.

The party that sums it all up

Our anniversary. Every year we celebrate it all together: food, paella, games and prizes contributed by the entrepreneurs themselves with their own products and services. It works because it isn’t a networking event or a sales pitch — it’s a party among people who’ve helped each other all year. This year we’re celebrating on October 17th, with an Olympics theme.

If you’re in Murcia — or thinking about settling there to work remotely or build something of your own — you already know step 1: pencil in the last Thursday of the month. Save this post for then, and show up at Murcia Emprendedora. No one builds a business better alone.
